Sometimes the best songs aren’t meant to be decoded—they’re meant to be enjoyed. With their latest single, “This Ain’t That,” Christopher Wyze & the Tellers lean fully into that philosophy, delivering a groove-driven track built purely for a good time.
The song actually began with a playful phrase Wyze couldn’t get out of his head: “This ain’t that… and that’s where it’s at.” From there, the band decided to chase the idea as far as it could go, intentionally crafting a song with no deeper meaning, no hidden message, and no complicated moral—just a feel-good groove and a little musical mischief.
“The whole song started as a goofy, jibber-jabber phrase I made up,” Wyze explains. “I started wondering if we could create a story-song about nothing. If you’re trying to decode the meaning of this song, you’re waaay overthinking it.”
Instead, the lyrics lean into playful, sing-song rhymes and carefree energy. The band built the track around a laid-back, juke-joint groove designed to keep listeners nodding along without needing to analyze every line.
Adding to the fun is the song’s vintage radio-style intro, which acts as an invitation to listeners before the groove kicks in.
“The old-timey radio intro was our way of telling the listener, ‘Buckle up—here comes a good time,’” Wyze says.
But the real moment of chaos—and creativity—came during the recording session when the band decided the track needed something extra.
“About halfway through the session, I wondered what the most ridiculous instrument we could throw in might be,” Wyze recalls. “A kazoo. We immediately sent the studio intern out to the music shop. He came back with a paper bag full of kazoos, and that’s when the monkey business really kicked up.”
If you listen closely, you’ll hear more than one kazoo. In fact, the band layered two: one carrying a tenor line and another providing the bass. Wyze then stacked harmonica on top, creating a deliberately over-the-top moment that perfectly captures the spirit of the song.
“It got a little ridiculous,” he laughs. “Which was the point.”
At its core, “This Ain’t That” is built around a simple mission: make people smile.
“I love music that sounds like it’s grinning at you the whole time,” Wyze says. “This track exists for one reason—to make folks get happy.”
With its juke-joint beat, playful lyrics, and carefree energy, the new single offers a refreshing break from the heavy introspection that often dominates modern songwriting. Sometimes, as Christopher Wyze & the Tellers prove, music can simply exist to lift your mood.
And with “This Ain’t That,” that’s exactly where it’s at.
