Australian artist Ben Abraham’s debut album, Sirens, is out today on Secretly Canadian. Download the album here and stream it here. The album is receiving early critical acclaim: NPR’s World Café calls it “distinctly human and direct” while Beats 1’s Zane Lowe praises its “beautiful songs.”
To celebrate the release, Abraham will tour the U.S. this spring with labelmate Damien Jurado, kicking off May 12 in Seattle. Further dates include May 18 at Los Angeles’ Troubadour, May 26 in Nashville, June 1 at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg, June 5 in Philadephia and more. Tickets to the shows will be available this Friday, February 26 on www.benabraham.com.
Abraham recorded and produced Sirens in Melbourne with the help of friends and longtime collaborators Jono Steer and Leigh Fisher. The album also features a collaboration with Sara Bareilles, with whom Abraham connected online and struck up a friendship several years ago, on “This Is On Me” as well as additional production from Gotye’s Wally De Backer on “Speak.” The official video for album track “You And Me” recently debuted, watch it:
Abraham brought his live show, which Tone Deaf calls “disarming” and “truly stunning,” to the U.S. for the first time at last year’s CMJ. Abraham backs up his voice with only guitar and harmonium, in the vein of “Cat Stevens, if Donny Hathaway and Cat had a baby and he hung out with Sufjan Stevens and Feist,” Abraham says.
Since he began writing songs while working in a Melbourne hospital, Abraham has written and recorded an album while collaborating on other projects with Ta-ku, Wafia, Gotye and more. The son of Indonesian folk-pop stars, he has risen to prominence in his hometown of Melbourne and throughout Australia through his much-lauded live performances, where his voice and talent have consistently blown audiences away.
