For the past few years Chris Hurst has worked to build himself in Nashville and surrounding areas as a standout artist/songwriter. His past releases
Freedom To Believe (2012), Where The Heart Goes (2017), and A Storie’s Tale (2018) have honed his talents in songwriting and performance.
Written, Recorded, Produced, and Mixed at his studio apartment in Downtown Nashville, A Storie’s Tale provides the depth of his storytelling and reveals the colors of his creative spirit.
When asked about what he wanted to accomplish with the new record by IndieMusicDiscovery he said, “The feeling I had never known and had always wanted to experience”. Chris said A Storie’s Tale was “Another time to put pen to paper and let the ink pour out.”
Chris Hurst will follow up the release with touring through 2019.
1. What was the first song you ever performed?
The first song I ever performed was “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd.
2. What are your musical influences?
My influences really vary by day, week, and year. I’m always influenced by what excites me in the moment. When I was a kid it was Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Ozzy/Black Sabbath, Van Halen, but as of the last couple years I’ve really gotten into Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Rev. Gary Davis, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bob Dylan.
3. What are 3 things you have to have near you at all times/never leave home without?
My pad/pen, my guitar, and my planner/calendar
4. What made you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I never realized it. It’s just something that I’ve always done.
5. What do you feel distinguishes “an artist” from just a musician?
An artist creates and a musician plays. An artist can be a musician but a musician can’t be an artist; however a performer simply entertains.
6. As an artist, how would you define success?
Having the right and ability to write, record, and play my songs.
7. How do you think you would like to be remembered by everyone if something were to happen to you suddenly?
I would ideally go out like a RockStar. I would want it to be in a plane crash or my bus went into a river or something like that. I wouldn’t want it to be along the lines of dying in a bathroom or getting hit on one of those electric scooters around town. What I’m trying to say is that I would want it to be romantic, and I would hope the memory of my death would staple my legacy.
8. What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
If you think you can do it then don’t even try. The fact of thinking about it is apprehensive and you can’t have any doubt about this life. If you want to do it because of Instagram fame or to drive a Ferrari then just walk away, because there are easier ways to obtain those things than through music. The best way I can sum it up is what Shotgun Willie said, “You can’t make a record if you ain’t got nothing to say”.
9. If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be?
I would change the fact that there’s no barrier of entry. I know in some ways it has been good for me, but there needs to be separation of professional and a kid in a bedroom. Right now Beyoncé and Bobby Bedroom can each garner over a million spins on Spotify, but that doesn’t distinguish the raw talent between the two. There’s too much digital noise in music right now and the static really hurts the artists and writers who fall in between the spectrum of those two.
10. Have you been involved in any benefit performances? What was it and how did you become involved?
I actually just played a benefit show in Atlanta for an organization called The Drake House, and the proceeds went to combat homelessness. It was a good time, and my friend Jason, who organized the event, asked me out to play.
11. What are your up to date performance plans? New releases? Tours? News?
I have a few regional show lined up as I’m still supporting my most recent release “A Storie’s Tale” which came out in October. I am currently working on my next record “Glass Object” which I am hoping to have ready very soon. I am thinking of a release sometime late summer/ early fall and to tour behind it.
12. Do you currently have an agent, endorsement, record deal, sponsor?
I have spoken to some people in regards to joining my team, but have not settled with anyone yet. So as of this interview it’s just me.
13. I’ve decided not to answer a 13th question because I really don’t want to go down in a plane or have any vehicle go into a river.
