Tennessee State University Announces 4th Annual Guitar Summit

The Department of Music at Tennessee State University will host the 4th annual TSU Guitar Summit from June 28-July 1, 2012. This multi-genre educational event is a weekend -long intensive series of classes and workshops for guitarists of all levels. Multiple instructors and guest artists will offer workshops on a wide variety of topics, from songwriting to lead guitar styles and creating signature guitar parts in country, rock, blues, jazz, R&B and more. A new course sequence for beginners will be offered concurrently, ensuring a level-appropriate course option for every student throughout the weekend.

In keeping with the creative culture of Music City, instructors will work together to foster a collaborative learning environment: not simply a series of traditional clinic/demonstrations but interactive discussions on each topic. Students come away from each workshop with both immediately applicable material and a deeper understanding of how musicians think and process information. “My best teachers showed me how to learn music, not just how to play it”, says Summit Coordinator Dave Isaacs. “Our goal is to provide insight and concepts that can become lifelong learning tools, not just to teach licks”.

The Guitar Summit has featured some of Music City’s best players and instructors in past years, and the 2012 Summit is no exception. Notable guest artists include hit songwriter Lisa Carver, John Mellencamp guitarist and co-writer Larry Crane, roots-rock icon Webb Wilder, and former Motown session guitarist and independent producer Bill Neale.

Sponsors of this year’s event include SESAC, the D’Addario Corporation, Music Starts Here, and the Nashville Muse.
