ou never know who might show up at a Tin Pan South round, and night two was no exception. The 22nd Annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival Presented by Regions Bank saw star-studded rounds with the likes of Larry Gatlin, Vince Gill, Craig Campbell and others joined by stars from the Grand Ole Opry, a hit television show and even publishing executives.
Hall of Famer Dennis Morgan, writer of such hits as “Sleeping Single In A Double Bed,” “Nobody” and “Smoky Mountain Rain,” was a guest on a round featuring Sherrie Austin, Steve Bogard, Rob Hatch and Justin Wilson at Douglas Corner Café. He performed a 34-year-old song recorded by Johnny Cash, which will be released as a single from Cash’s posthumous Out Among The Stars album. During the round, an audience member paid Tin Pan South presenter NSAI $200 for the group to sing one more round of songs.
Jamie Lynn Spears had to cancel her appearance at the Bluebird Café late show, so hit singer/songwriter Jewel graciously took her place. Hit ABC-TV show Nashville star Sam Palladio sat in on the early round at the Rutledge Live Music Venue. The show’s Aubrey Peeples, who plays Layla Grant, and Chaley Rose, who portrays Zoey Dalton on the show, were both in the audience.
Grand Ole Opry star Jan Howard joined her buddies Larry Gatlin, Vince Gill, Leslie Satcher and Bobby Tomberlin at the standing-room-only Station Inn. John Ozier, General Manager, Creative of ole Publishing, whose own songs have been recorded by Tim McGraw, Rodney Atkins, Clay Walker, Lee Brice, Ronnie Dunn, Jo Dee Messina and LeAnn Rimes, was the only “suit” on stage last night and closed the early show at the Bluebird.
Highlights tonight include Rob Crosby, James Dean Hicks, Angela Kaset and Allen Shamblin at the Douglas Corner early show. The last couple of years have been significant for Shamblin. He had a huge hit with Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” and he was inducted into The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The “Ladies of the Night” round at the early Commodore Grille show will feature Kellys Collins (“Goodbye Looks Good On Me,” the theme song she co-wrote for Reba’s 2012-13 Malibu Country ABC-TV season), Erin Enderlin (“Last Call” by Lee Ann Womack, “Monday Morning Church” by Alan Jackson and “You Don’t Know Jack” by Luke Bryan), Liz Hengber (Reba’s “For My Broken Heart” and “Forever Love”) and songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Alex Kline.
The BB King’s Blues Club late show is what Nashville is all about: young singer/songwriters writing their own songs and making their own records. Blake Chaffin was the first writer in Nashville signed to Parallel Entertainment, and it’s no wonder with songs like “Perfect Girl,” “Let’s Go” and “You’d Think,” all of which were co-written with songwriter/artist Randy Montana (“Ain’t Much Left Of Loving You,” “1,000 Faces” and “Can’t Feel The Pain”.) Adam Hambrick (“How Many Miles,” “I Would Never” and “Less Like A Bullet”) and Logan Mize (“Used Up,” “State Of Your Heart” and “Hey Carolina”) and the rest of these gents bring their country rock to an adoring audience.
