Critically acclaimed U.K. based band Matthew and the Atlas will support Mumford and Sons on their U.S. tour throughout June. Please see reverse for full U.S. tour schedule.
Having formed in late 2009, Kingdom of Your Own is the second 4-song EP from Matthew and the Atlas following the debut release To the North that Q Magazine described as “A powerful piece of music that is more than impressive for a debut.” The releases, coupled with their growing live reputation, prompted The Independent to label the band “spellbinding,” while Phil Alexander, editor-in-chief of Mojo has said that they “…possess the dusty, muscular appeal of Springsteen at his most down-home.” Both EPs were recorded and released by London based Indie Communion Records, the brainchild of Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett.
Matthew and the Atlas is Matthew Hegarty (Guitar, Vocal), Lindsay West (Piano, Vocal), Harrison Cargill (Banjo, Guitar), Dave Millar (Accordion) and Tommy Field (Drums). Although U.K.-based, two thirds of the band hold American passports, and are self-described as a “textured and dreamy take on Americana, filtered through a distinctly English folk sensibility.” The British music website Rockfeedback comments that lead vocalist, Hegarty “…is blessed with the kind of voice that bears instant comparison with the likes of Ray Lamontagne and Nick Drake, but that sounds, above all, like the hoarse voice of a storyteller.”
In addition to touring with Mumford and Sons this June, Matthew and the Atlas have announced U.S. dates including a special Bonnaroo performance, a one-off co-headline with The Head and the Heart at the Palm Theatre in Telluride, and a run of shows in the North East at the end of the month. The band is currently writing their debut full-length, slated for release in early 2012.
