He picked up the guitar at the young age of 12, followed the classics from pop, rock and even the classical greats and his mom’s old vinyl. He has one of the most beautiful and recognizable voices I think I’ve heard lately in the country music industry. He’s true country with a hint of rock and the Americana feel is raw and ready.
In 2001 along with his band mates he formed an acoustic rock group called “All Together Spent”, signed a management deal and toured the east coast for almost 5 years. Then in 2008 he decided it was time to make some changes and moved to NYC. During his stay in the Big Apple he wrote, recorded and self produced his first solo album called “Off Course” and received a great response from listeners around the country.
The first song on this album was very nice and inviting. I really enjoyed the opening of “Do A Little Dance”. The organ was awesome. Instrumentally this song is strong, romantic, and makes you want to swing. Vocals are crisp, bright and clear.
This album is “fresh”, it’s not the same old repeat of some of what we hear today on country stations. His style is new and unique. Ryan presents something that we haven’t heard in a very long time…real, down to earth, good country music.
“How Will I Know When It’s Over” is another soft and romantic song. This song was first released on his album Heart In Handcuffs. The steel guitar sounds bring you in and are very welcoming. “I’m still drunk on you” is so true for this type of music. We are drunk on the desire, the message, the feeling within each song. Excellent choice.
“Warm Whiskey Nights” is the album title track. Outstanding acoustic guitar and the tambourine brings the song together gracefully. Vocals so far on this album are on target for this genre. Ryan reminds me of a younger Keith Urban. This song is a blend of traditional and classic country music.
I really enjoyed “Take A Little Time”, this song is a country rock ballad. Has a great up tempo sound and once again he brings strong lyrics, solid harmonies, and instrumentally it’s right on target.
Soft intro and a slight reverb on the vocals are welcoming and warm with “It’s Only Rain.” The sound is almost like what you would hear from and old transistor radio. Then after the first couple of verses it comes through to a more clear and present impression.
Accomplishments and accolades for Justin Ryan include collaboration with Christine Ohlman, the former female lead singer with the SNL Band, he toured with the AFE (Armed Forces Entertainment) Tour for two months around the world, made the One’s to Watch List 12 times for NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International), and has had multiple songs either written or co-written that have been highly considered by artists such as Rascal Flatts. He holds an endorsement by Bedell Guitars. He is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International. He has opened for Third Blind Eye, Scott Wieland, and Better Than Ezra.
Currently Justin makes regular trips to Nashville to pitch his music and he resides on the Eastern shore of Maryland with his wife Annie and their children Carys, Kellen, and Arden.
